Indian Wells Hacienda

Old World character with a colorful, contemporary twist

This Indian Wells, California home was taken down to the studs and rebuilt by AM Interior Design for a couple who love color, pattern, and entertaining. The result is a hacienda-style home with a contemporary edge: rustic and traditional in spirit, but fresh, bright, and full of personality.

The entry sets the tone, with vintage timber beams, a custom chandelier, wide-plank white oak floors, and pale limestone-finished walls. Throughout the main spaces, a quiet desert palette provides the backdrop for bold fabrics, rugs, and artwork. In the great room, a fireplace wrapped in compass-and-star terracotta tile adds texture without competing with the color around it, and multiple seating areas make the room easy to gather in.

The kitchen was reimagined as a chef’s kitchen that flows into the dining and living areas. Its full-height zellige backsplash, marble waterfall island that seats six, and custom green paint on the island and breakfast nook bring richness and humor. Each bathroom has its own pattern, from hacienda-inspired tile to desert-themed wallpaper, so every one feels like a small jewel box. Outside, a brick-faced pool deck and a stone wall with water features echo the colors of the desert beyond.

I photographed the home for AM Interior Design, focusing on how the patterns and materials layer from room to room and how the light of the desert changes them through the day.
